L. Frank Baum (1856–1919) was an American writer whose imagination gave us The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. Born in upstate New York, he fell in love with storytelling and the theater early on. As a young man, he wrote plays, acted, and ran theater productions, developing a love for drama and visual storytelling. Before finding real success as an author, Baum tried journalism and several business ventures. His first big hit was Father Goose (1899), a playful book of verse that became a bestseller. The following year, he published The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, a fresh fairy tale that readers adored. Baum went on to write thirteen more Oz books, creating one of literature’s most enduring fantasy worlds. This Light Book features W. W. Denslow’s whimsical illustrations, showing Dorothy and her friends on the yellow brick road, while Glinda, the good witch of the South, beckons toward the Emerald City where the Wizard is making his dramatic escape in a hot air balloon.
