Virgin & Child Notecard

This beautiful notecard highlights and illumination from one of the most famous and beautiful of manuscripts in the Morgan's collection, the Hours of Catherine of Cleves. 

This rich book of hours from around 1440 contains seventy-one psalms: thirty-one in the Hours of the Virgin, ten in the Long Hours of the Cross, seven in the Penitential Psalms, and thirty-one in the Office of the Dead. At the commencement of the Hours of the Virgin, this illumination highlights just how special this manuscript is. Instead of the single miniature to mark Matins, Catherine has a pair: a full-page Virgin and Child (as depicted in this notecard) and an opposing half-page Annunciation to Joachim.
