In February 1888, Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890) left the gray chill of Paris for the warmth of Arles in southern France where the bright light and vivid colors of the countryside inspired some of his most famous paintings. By the spring, he rented a house where he hoped to establish an artists’ collective. Excited by the new space, he painted The Bedroom in Arles, and wrote to his brother Theo, “it is painting in free flat tints like the Japanese prints.” While there, he painted two more versions of The Bedroom, each expressing his search for peace and tranquility, using the symbolism of color in his carefully chosen palette.
