This magnet is sure to be a protective charm and adored by any medieval scholar!

The psalms were among the most potent weapons deployed by Jews and Christians to defeat demons. Christ overcoming the forces of evil is a subject often used alongside Psalm 90:13, one of the most frequently quoted verses, "Thou shalt walk upon the asp and the basilisk: thou shalt trample under foot the lion and the dragon." This image, created around 1060 at the famous Benedictine monastery of Mont-Saint Michel, is from the Sacramentary named after it in the Morgan's collection. Here Christ is set within a large initial D of "D[eu]s" (God), the first word of the prayer, and is holding a staff and book surmounting the beasts of a winged dragon and defeated lion.

This product was created to accompany the exhibition Sing a New Song: The Psalms in Medieval Art and Life on view at the Morgan Library & Museum September 12, 2025 through January 4, 2026.
