Even though grim, this Plague Doctor Ornament will appeal to historians and doctors alike.
A plague doctor was a specialized medical worker who treated the poor and victims of the bubonic plague epidemics in 17th century Europe. Hired by towns to care for all people, they counted the dead and wrote down names as well as witnessing wills and conducting autopsies to learn about disease. Their spooky outfit was designed to protect them in their work. The beak mask was filled with strong herbs and vinegar sponges to block bad air. They wore a waxed coat to stop fluids or fleas and their cane was used to examine the sick without touching them.
