Louisa May Alcott (1832–1888) was an American novelist best known for her classic novel Little Women. Born in Germantown, Pennsylvania and raised in Concord, Massachusetts, she grew up among leading thinkers such as Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry David Thoreau. Because her family often struggled financially, Alcott began writing at a young age to help support them. During the American Civil War she served, as a nurse in Washington, D.C., later describing the experience in four stories entitled Hospital Sketches. Her most famous work, Little Women (1868), was inspired by her childhood and her close relationship with her sisters. Its spirited heroine, Jo March, reflects much of Alcott’s own independence and ambition. The book’s success led to sequels including Little Men and Jo's Boys. Today, Alcott is remembered as one of America’s most beloved authors, celebrated for stories of family, resilience, and growing up.
