Fun fact: The Morgan Library & Museum owns a copy of Frankenstein annotated by Mary Shelley herself!

Mary Shelley (1797–1851) was an English writer best known for Frankenstein; or The Modern Prometheus (1818), a groundbreaking novel that helped shape modern science fiction and horror. The idea came to her in 1816 during a stormy summer in Switzerland, when she joined a ghost story challenge with Lord Byron and her future husband, Percy Bysshe Shelley. When Frankenstein was first published in 1818, it appeared anonymously due in part to social prejudice against women authors. Because Percy Shelley wrote the preface, many readers assumed he was the author. Mary Shelley was officially credited in the 1823 edition, confirming her as the creator of one of literature’s most enduring and influential novels. She went on to write several other works, but Frankenstein remains her lasting legacy.
