A page from the Hours of Catherine of Cleves is colorfully reproduced on this attractive notecard. Dressed in his splendid papal regalia, St. Gregory the Great (ca. 540– 604) is framed by a border of gold and silver coins. This unusual border may refer to Gregory’s decision to donate his wealth to the Church, or it could allude to his support of the poor in Rome. The coins, based on actual models, are remarkably illusionistic, showing irregularities of minting and evidence of wear.
