With the Garden of Eden at the top of the map and Jerusalem prominently occupying the center, this map by Hanns Rust made ca. 1480 in Germany. The design of the map is complicated by wildly contorting rivers and its tendency to depict regions erroneously as islands. Additional details include the personifications of the four winds at the edges of the world, aligned with the cardinal directions, as well as two roundels below depicting the four elements.
This product was created to complement an exhibition at the Morgan Library & Museum, The Book of Marvels: Imagining the Medieval World, on view January 25, 2025 through May 25, 2025.
