Her novels addressed issues of social class and the plight of the laborer, often couched within stories of love and marriage. She placed many of her characters in rural settings like her native Berry in central France. Off the page, Sand championed women’s rights and advocated for the working class, the poor, and a French republic. Highly independent, she dressed in men’s clothing (without filing for the required permit) in order to get around Paris more easily, smoked cigars, and enjoyed several romantic relationships, including one with the composer Frédéric Chopin. Her network encompassed writers, musicians, and artists, such as Théodore Rousseau.

Sand experimented with watercolor in the 1870s. She dripped pigment onto thick paper and pressed the surface with another sheet, which she had dampened. She then pulled the papers apart, creating a texture reminiscent of dense foliage, and transformed these haphazard spots into imagined scenes of forests, mountains, and lakes. Sand referred to the results as “crushed” or “dendritic drawings”— evoking the effect of the finished works using the Greek word for “tree.” She sometimes pasted colorful vegetal matter within her compositions. The scale and texture of these organic elements add an almost surreal note of play to the scenes, reminding us that they are creative experiments rather than studied landscapes.

This magnet set is a product made to complement the exhibition Into the Woods: French Drawings and Photographs from the Karen B. Hüet's exquisitely worked portrait shows the giraffe in its new home with the groom who came with it and cared for it for the next eighteen years.

This print was produced from the Morgan’s collections to accompany the exhibition Walton Ford: Birds and Beasts of the Studio on view at the Morgan Library & Museum April 12, 2024 through October 20, 2024.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0678/6246/2681/files/Study_of_Giraffe_Matted_Print_742dfb00-20e3-4c5c-b0e5-a8b22baa7803.jpg?v=1712854936
renoir-clouds-over-a-lake-notecard
Renoir Clouds over a Lake Notecard

One of two drawings by the Impressionist artist Auguste Renoir (1841-1919) included in the Eveillard Gift to the Morgan Library & Museum, these watercolor landscapes most likely date from the first half of the 1890s, a decade during which Renoir and his family traveled to several coastal sites outside of Paris, before discovering the qualities of the South of France in the latter part of that decade.

This notecard was produced to accompany an exhibition on view at the Morgan Library & Museum, Liberty to the Imagination: Drawings from the Eveillard Gift, June 7, 2024 through October 6, 2024.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0678/6246/2681/files/Renoir_Trees_on_Edge_of_Lake_Notecard.jpg?v=1717102873
the-dream-notecard
The Dream Notecard

“My drawings inspire yet cannot be defined. Generally only an inch in height, engraved seals are among the smallest objects ever produced by sculptors. They were carved in great detail with simple tools on semi precious stones. These engraved objects provide a continuous artistic and chronological sequence of more than three thousand years. The seals collection covers all the significant styles of Mesopotamian engraving from the end of the fifth millennium B.C. to the fourth century B.C. as well as most of the styles of other countries of ancient Western Asia. Areas of particular strength include seals of the second millennium B.C. made outside southern Mesopotamia (Cappadocia, Syria, and Mitannia) as well as Old Babylonian and Neo-Assyrian seals. The Middle Assyrian seals are among the finest in any collection.

Wonderful stationery to send a letter to friends and family! A popular boxed set of stationery in the Morgan shop. A must have for Beatrix Potter fans!

Beatrix Potter often wrote personal letters to children and referenced her stories with drawings. Her illustrated letters are among the most treasured keepsakes within the Morgan Library and Museum’s collection.

Around 1900 Potter began to explore the possibility of making commercial publications out of the stories she had written in her picture letters. She borrowed them back from the children and decided to start with Peter Rabbit. Eight pages long, each episode accompanied with an illustration, that letter most obviously had the makings of a book. (The original is now on deposit at the Victoria & Albert Museum.) The publication process was frustrating and arduous, partly because publishers did not understand what she was trying to achieve and partly because she disagreed with them about publishing techniques. Here she confided to a younger sister of Noel Moore that negotiations were not going well and that she might have to try again with another firm. One of the sticking points was the price and size of the book, the publisher arguing for a larger and more expensive product, the author demanding something smaller and cheaper, a booklet "little rabbits" could afford. Eventually she got her way and succeeded in setting modest prices for a book in a smaller format, an endearing feature of the Peter Rabbit series to this day.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0678/6246/2681/files/Rabbits_Shopping_for_Books_Boxed_Notecards.jpg?v=1722121802
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0678/6246/2681/collections/Germander_Speedwell_with_a_Ladybug_Notecard_5c597715-2c05-458b-b0e2-289bcf717137.jpg?v=1771182325
